Melton Mowbray

Melton Mowbray is a bustling market town set in the heart of the East Midlands. The town is internationally famous for Stilton cheese and pork pies and its attractive situation on the River Eye makes it a popular destination for visitors. It is surrounded with attractive parks, gardens and architecture.

St Mary's Church, in Burton Street, is possibly the most impressive of all the county's churches and beautifully illustrates the early-English architectural periods. It has in it's shadows the ancient Anne of Cleeves House.

The Melton Carnegie Museum illustrates not only the history of Stilton cheese and pork pies, but also shows us the glamour of days gone past when gentry from all over the world would visit the town for the hunting season.

The expression 'PAINTING THE TOWN RED” originated in Melton Mowbray. Some young aristocrats who came to Melton for the hunt went out on a drunken spree in the 1800s and literally painted Melton town centre red. In 2003 an Arts Fesitval was held in the town to celebrate the expression.

With the markets held in Market Square and at the Cattle and Sheep Market on Scalford Road on several days of the week, Melton Mowbray makes an interesting place to visit anytime of the year.
