Somerby

Somerby has a population approaching 500 and lies in the wolds, 5.7 miles south of Melton Mowbray. The Parish of Somerby comprises four villages; Burrough on the Hill, Leesthorpe, Pickwell and Somerby. Somerby is the largest of the Parish Villages and has a variety of local services including a shop/post office, school, doctor's surgery and two pubs. The countrside is very attractive throughout the Parish and is often referred to as 'High Leicestershire'

Veterans of Arnhem hold a parade and reunion each September since the briefing for that airborne attack was held in Somerby -- and there is a pair of stained glass windows in the village Church of All Saints, donated by the Leicestershire branch of the Parachute Regiment in honour of the Arnhem landings and all those who died in the assault.
