Long Clawson

In the Vale of Belvoir, six miles north-west of Melton Mowbray. Its main street is one and a quarter miles long with 14 right angle bends, with a linear arrangement of red brick farm buildings and houses, mostly dating from the 18th century; and many of them listed. To the east, on the lower slopes of the Vale scarp, a 19th century tower windmill has recently been restored with its unusual Lincolnshire cap. Long Clawson Dairy, established early this century, is renowned for its Stilton and other cheeses. Long Clawson still has local shops, a pub and a primary school.

The large Parish Church of St. Remigius, built on a similar cruciform plan to St Mary’s in Melton, dates from the late Norman period and contains a medieval effigy of William Bozon, a Crusader. A moated site directly to the east of the church in Castle Field is a scheduled Ancient Monument. The church overlooks a manor house built (circa 1600) in local stone with a medieval fish-pond (which is still stocked today). The late Georgian hall at East End has a carp-stocked fish-pond. Nearby, on the roadside, is a listed mud wall.
