Melton Mowbray Country Fair

Sunday 29th June 2008.

‘We are sorry to say that there will be no Melton Mowbray Country Fair this year, for the second year running.

There is an ongoing legal dispute between the Town Estate and the Victorian Christmas Fayre which we had hoped would have been decided on March 10th but the Court case has now been put back to May.

The Country Fair and the Victorian Christmas Fayre are very much linked. They are both charitable events, the committees are mainly the same people and I am the organiser for both. In the current circumstances it is just not possible for us to work closely with the Town Estate in the way that is necessary in order to produce the first class event which we have always managed previously with the Country Fair and which people have come to expect.

We have considered holding the Country Fair elsewhere but the only place really for the Country Fair is our Town parks. It just would not be the same if it were held away from the Town centre.

The situation since December 2006 has been incredibly difficult for us all but we feel certain that in the end, our Committee and the Town Estate will just want what is best for the people of Melton Mowbray. We can make no guarantees for the future but for the good of the town, we believe that we and the Town Estate must strive to rebuild the good relationship which we have had in the past.  The Country Fair has become an important part of putting Melton Mowbray on the map of top quality events – it would be very sad and a great loss to Melton Mowbray if this Fair were to be lost for ever.’
